Governor
General's Literary Awards
In 1937, Governor General Lord Tweedsmuir (John Buchan, author of The 39 Steps)
awarded the first Governor General's Literary Awards to honor the best books
of 1936. Since then, the prizes have evolved into Canada's pre-eminent national
literary awards. The Awards winners are chosen by independent peer juries in
each category (seven English and seven French), appointed by the Canada Council
for the Arts. The awards are presented by the Governor General of Canada and
the Chairman of the Canada Council for the Arts, and the winners currently
receive a check for $15,000.
