Caroline Leavitt, Coming Back to Me

Book Description
From an award-winning and critically acclaimed writer comes a new novel about a young family in crisis--and the woman who turns their lives around.

Newlyweds Gary and Molly are very much in love, and excited about the imminent birth of their first baby. But a devastating medical situation suddenly leaves Gary caring for young Otis alone and facing a mountain of medical bills and the loss of his job. Just when all hope for happiness--and for Molly--evaporates, into their lives comes Molly's estranged sister. Bringing long-buried secrets and emotions out into the open, she will ultimately save Gary and Molly's marriage--and their lives. Coming Back To Me is a novel about memory and family secrets, about sisters and marriage and finding inroads into a closed community. It's about the inability of anyone to ever be truly safe. And it's about love.

Coming Back To Me came out of personal experience. After a dream pregnancy and the birth of her first child, Leavitt suddenly developed a rare and fatal blood disorder. Her child came home days after being born. Two months, five operations and three near-deaths, Leavitt came home, too. Leavitt fought for her recovery for over a year, but because she had been given memory blockers, she had no recall, and without memory, she couldn't process and move through the trauma. It wasn't until she began to create a fictional memory, that she began to heal.
